Altea from Benidorm: Old Town, tram and viewpoints
Updated October 18, 2026 · 5 min read
The short answer. Use the tram for an inexpensive, flexible Old Town visit; book a tour when you want Altea combined with another destination and no timetable planning.
Going independently
TRAM d’Alacant line 9 links Benidorm Intermodal and Altea. The published timetable shows a roughly hourly pattern, but engineering works can introduce replacement buses or altered stops. Check the official planner on the day rather than relying on an old screenshot.
From Altea station, the rewarding part is uphill: white streets around the church square and viewpoints over the bay. Wear shoes with grip and allow time for the climb. The station does not place you directly at the highest viewpoint. A mobility-limited visitor should examine the exact route and taxi alternative.
Independent travel lets you stop for lunch and return when you choose. It does not solve navigation or combine distant sights automatically.
Guided alternative
The Altea and Calpe day trip from Benidorm starts at €45, lasts seven hours and has 89 reviews. You pay for a structured two-town day and transport. Another itinerary combines Guadalest, Altea and the Algar Waterfalls; that covers more, but gives each place less unhurried time.
Choose a tour for several stops or if transfers matter. Choose the tram when Altea itself is the point. Driving is unnecessary for the central Old Town and creates a parking task; a car becomes useful only when Altea is one stop on a wider Costa Blanca route.
Verdict
For Altea alone, the tram is the honest recommendation. For Altea plus Calpe, Guadalest or Algar in one day, a guided trip is more coherent. Compare day trips from Benidorm.
