Benidorm car hire: what do excess, deposit and desk extras mean?
Updated October 19, 2026 · 7 min read
The answer first: compare the amount payable now, the security deposit and your maximum contractual liability as three separate figures. A cheap headline rate is not a cheap rental if the fuel policy does not suit your journey, the card at collection is rejected or the excess is more than you are prepared to carry. Open the rental conditions for the exact Benidorm offer before paying; generic promises cannot replace that contract.

Excess and deposit are not the same thing
The excess is the part of a covered loss for which the rental agreement may leave you liable. The deposit is money or card capacity held as security. One is a liability limit within specified cover; the other is a collection procedure. They can have different amounts, and the deposit may also cover fuel, tolls or other contractual charges.
Check which card type and whose name the supplier accepts. A card that works for online payment is not automatically acceptable for the deposit at the desk. Also read when a block is released: release by the supplier and the moment your bank displays the available balance are not necessarily the same event.
What CDW does and does not tell you
CDW describes collision-damage cover, but the letters alone do not prove that every part, incident or driver is covered. Read the exclusions for tyres, glass, roof, underside, keys, interior, towing and use on restricted roads. Also check what evidence the contract requires after damage. Do not translate “CDW included” into “nothing more can be charged”.
A comparison site’s protection product and an extra sold at the rental desk may work differently. One may reduce what the supplier blocks; another may reimburse eligible costs later. The practical questions are: who takes the initial payment, which documents are required, what is excluded and whether the supplier’s deposit changes. Decide from the written terms, not from pressure at the counter.
Fuel, mileage and the named driver
A full-to-full fuel policy is easy to understand only if you can refill close to return. Other arrangements may include a service charge or refund calculation. Photograph the fuel gauge and the car at collection and return, and keep the final fuel receipt when the conditions request it.
Confirm whether mileage is unlimited for your chosen vehicle and dates. Then add every person who will actually drive. An additional driver may cost extra, and an unnamed person behind the wheel can create a serious contract problem. The same applies to crossing a border or taking the vehicle on a ferry: permission must come from the supplier’s conditions, not from an assumption that the road is open.
Age rules and desk charges
There is no responsible universal minimum age or young-driver fee for “car hire in Benidorm”. Suppliers set different licence-history, age and vehicle-group rules. Enter the real driver’s age when searching, then read the offer-specific conditions for a surcharge and restricted categories. Do the same for late collection, out-of-hours service, child seats and one-way returns.
Bring the licence and identity documents named in the confirmation. If the booking requires an international driving permit for your licence, arrange it before travel; the rental desk cannot repair missing documentation.
A five-minute check before payment
Write down five items from the chosen offer: total payable, deposit, excess, accepted payment card and fuel policy. Then inspect CDW exclusions, mileage, additional-driver terms and the collection window. Save the confirmation and condition pages so you can compare them with the paperwork offered at pickup.
The best choice is not automatically the lowest price. It is the offer whose deposit you can provide, whose liability you understand and whose operating hours match your flight or hotel plans.
